Road to HYROX: Inside Valhalla's 8-Week HYROX Training Program

HYROX Boston is nine weeks away. Whether you're racing Boston, preparing for your first HYROX, or simply want a more structured way to train, our 8-week Road to HYROX program starts Wednesday, August 12 at Valhalla Fitness in Newington, CT.
This post breaks down exactly how the block is built — what you'll do each week, why the sessions are ordered the way they are, and how you'll measure whether it's working.
Why strength comes first in HYROX training
Most people preparing for HYROX default to more running and more erg work. That's half the picture.
HYROX is eight 1km runs interrupted by eight functional stations — sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmer's carry, sandbag lunges, wall balls. Every one of those stations is a loaded movement performed while you're already fatigued. The limiting factor for most athletes isn't aerobic capacity in isolation. It's the ability to keep moving efficiently under load as fatigue accumulates.
That's what strength training buys you. It builds the foundation to move well under load and hold that quality when you're deep into a race. Which is why our regular strength programming stays central to the plan rather than getting pushed aside for extra conditioning.
Road to HYROX brings three things together:
- Strength Training — the foundation
- HYROX Capacity — your ability to sustain work
- HYROX Performance — applying it under race conditions
Two HYROX-specific sessions each week
Alongside strength training, we're adding more structure and progression to our HYROX-specific programming. Wednesday and Saturday sessions now have distinct training purposes, designed to work together across the 8-week block.
Wednesday — HYROX Capacity
Build your capacity.
The format stays consistent throughout the training block while work and rest periods progressively change. That consistency is deliberate: it challenges your ability to maintain pace between cardio and functional movements, and it makes progress measurable.
In Week 1 you'll establish your baseline and receive a tracking sheet to measure progress across the program. Don't miss Week 1 — that's where your baseline starts, and every week after is measured against it.
Saturday — HYROX Performance
Put your training to the test.
Saturday brings variety. Challenge-style workouts change week to week, combining running, HYROX movements and longer efforts in different ways.
The workout changes; the goal doesn't. Challenge your fitness, practice pacing under fatigue, and prepare for the specific demands of race day.
How the 8 weeks progress
Weeks 1–4: build the base
The first four weeks establish your baseline and progressively build your ability to sustain quality work under fatigue.
Wednesday Capacity sessions use a consistent format with evolving work and rest periods, so you can track progress and see measurable improvement as the weeks build. This is where most of the fitness is banked.
HYROX Simulation — Saturday, September 12
Halfway through, you get a live test.
Put the first four weeks of training into our HYROX Simulation. Take it on solo, or grab a partner and split the work and reps as you make your way through the course.
Use the simulation to practice race flow, test your pacing, and see how your fitness has progressed before heading into the final training block. Simulation sign-ups are coming soon.
Weeks 5–8: sharpen for race day
With a stronger foundation established, the final block shifts toward applying that capacity with greater intensity and race specificity.
You'll keep progressing your Wednesday Capacity work while Saturday challenge workouts develop pacing, efficiency and confidence under fatigue as race day approaches.
Who this is for
You don't need to be racing HYROX Boston to benefit from this block. Road to HYROX suits you if you're:
- Racing HYROX Boston and want a structured 8-week run-in
- Preparing for your first HYROX and don't know where to start
- Training without a plan and want progression you can actually measure
- Looking for a harder, more purposeful way to train alongside other people doing the same

Frequently asked questions
When does the Road to HYROX program start?
Wednesday, August 12, 2026. It runs as an 8-week block leading into HYROX Boston.
Do I need HYROX experience to join?
No. The program suits first-timers and experienced racers — the sessions are scalable, and Week 1 establishes your personal baseline regardless of starting point.
How many sessions per week?
Two HYROX-specific sessions — Wednesday (Capacity) and Saturday (Performance) — alongside our regular strength programming.
What if I can't make Week 1?
You can still join, but Week 1 is where you set your baseline and receive your tracking sheet. If you can only protect one session in the whole block, protect that one.
